A Force to be Reckoned With

A Force to be Reckoned With

Author’s Not: I am writing this piece to show my knowledge of the Cause and Effect of the book Give Me Liberty, by L.M. Elliot. I hope that you enjoy this piece as much as I have enjoyed writing.

Give me Liberty, by L.M. Elliot is a book about Nathaniel an indentured servant living in colonial Virginia. At a very early age Nathaniel’s mother passed away and due to the fact that Nathaniel’s father is no longer able to provide for Nathaniel. His father is forced to sell him into indentured slavery, in hopes for a better life for Nathaniel. This leads the story to its climax when Nathaniel is brutally beaten by Owen, his first master.  After this Nathaniel becomes fragile, scared and unable to trust most people. Living in the times of the Revolutionary War, this becomes a handy-cap for Nathaniel that can only be healed with the kindness, nurture and love of a family figure.
This handy-cap of Nathaniel’s was built up by one dreadful event. When Nathaniel was beaten by Owen it was not just a slap or pulling of the hair; no. Nathaniel was whipped and beaten in public, he felt small, humiliated and even worse yet betrayed by his father for selling him into that cruel lifestyle. He could no longer trust the people closest to him, the people he thought he could trust were the very people who betrayed him in the end. Now this disability to trust people has built up inside of Nathaniel and he is not able to come to trust anyone, which in the times of the Revolutionary War is not good for Nathaniel’s safe keeping. This may lead Nathaniel into great danger in the future.
Though Nathaniel is not able to easily trust others, he is able to find his redemption through the kindness of a stranger. For the first time in a long time he is learning to trust someone again. There is not a doubt in my mind that Nathaniel will conquer this fear, through his sheer determination and his “never give up” attitude. Nathaniel is truly a force not to be reckoned with.
